What is voice AI, in one sentence?

Voice AI is technology that lets a computer listen to human speech, understand what was meant, and answer in a natural voice. An AI voice agent is voice AI put to work on a phone line: it answers calls for a business and completes requests during the call, such as booking an appointment or taking an order.

This glossary explains the terms you will meet when you read about voice AI or compare products. It is written for business owners, not engineers. Spoto is a smart assistant from Baghdad, Iraq, that answers business calls in Iraqi Arabic, English and Kurdish, and books, takes orders and opens tickets on the same call. For how the pieces work together, read what is voice AI, and for the full guide, AI voice agents in Iraq.

What are the basic voice AI terms?

The basic terms describe what the product is: an AI voice agent answers and acts on calls, voice AI is the wider technology, and names such as AI receptionist or AI phone assistant describe the same idea from the caller's side. Spoto's own name for itself is a smart assistant.

  • AI voice agent. Software that answers phone calls in natural speech, understands the caller and completes the request on the call.
  • Voice AI. The family of technologies behind it: hearing, understanding and speaking.
  • AI phone assistant. Another common name for an AI voice agent, often used by small businesses.
  • AI receptionist. The name people use when the agent takes the calls a front desk would take. Spoto is not a receptionist by title; it answers the phone so your receptionist can focus on the desk.
  • Smart assistant. Spoto's name for itself, because it does the work, not only the talking.
  • Conversational AI. AI that holds a back-and-forth conversation, by voice or by text.
  • Chatbot. A text-based assistant on a website or messaging app. It answers people who type, not people who call. See Spoto vs chatbots.

How does a voice agent hear, understand and speak?

A voice agent hears with speech recognition, which turns sound into words; understands with a language model, which works out the meaning and the intent; and speaks with text to speech, which turns the reply into a natural voice. Between understanding and speaking, a useful agent checks live data and acts.

The technologies inside one answer
  1. 1

    Speech recognition

Turns the caller's speech into text. Also called ASR or speech to text.

  2. 2

    Language understanding

A large language model works out what the caller means and wants.

  3. 3

    Live data

The agent reads the business's records: hours, free times, prices, stock.

  4. 4

    Action

It books, orders or records a ticket, after reading the details back.

  5. 5

    Text to speech

The reply is spoken in a natural voice. Also called TTS.

  • Speech recognition (ASR). Automatic speech recognition: the step that turns spoken words into text. Its quality decides whether "Karrada" is heard as Karrada.
  • Large language model (LLM). The AI model that reads the words and produces an answer. It is what makes the conversation feel natural.
  • Natural language understanding (NLU). Working out the meaning of what was said, not just the words.
  • Intent. What the caller wants: ask a question, book, order, cancel, complain.
  • Entity. A detail inside the request: a day, a time, a dish, a doctor's name, an address.
  • Text to speech (TTS). The step that turns the written reply into speech.
  • Voice. The sound of the agent: tone, speed, accent. With Spoto, each business's voice and greeting are set up by Spoto.

Which language terms matter in Iraq?

In Iraq, the language terms that matter most are dialect, code-switching and multilingual support. Callers speak Iraqi Arabic, not the formal Arabic of the news, and many mix Arabic with English words or switch to Kurdish. A voice agent built for Iraq must understand all of this on the same number.

  • Dialect. A regional form of a language. Iraqi Arabic is one; Gulf, Levantine and Egyptian Arabic are others. A voice agent trained mostly on one dialect can mishear another.
  • Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). The formal Arabic of news and books. Few callers speak it on the phone.
  • Code-switching. Moving between languages in one sentence or one call, for example Iraqi Arabic with English product names.
  • Multilingual. Able to answer in more than one language. Spoto speaks Iraqi Arabic first, plus English and Kurdish.

What do the phone line terms mean?

Phone line terms describe how calls reach the agent: your business number, the carrier that runs the line, call forwarding, and whether the line accepts concurrent calls. They decide how many callers can be answered at once and whether customers keep the number they know.

  • Business number. The number customers call. With Spoto it stays the same; calls from it reach the assistant.
  • Carrier. The phone company that provides your line.
  • Call forwarding. Sending calls from one number to another, for example to the agent.
  • Concurrent calls. Several calls on the same line at the same time. Spoto answers several at once when your line accepts concurrent calls; this is arranged with your carrier during setup.
  • SIP trunk. A way to deliver phone calls over the internet instead of a copper line. Many business lines use one.
  • IVR (phone menu). Interactive voice response: "press 1 for sales, press 2 for support". The caller presses numbers instead of speaking freely. See Spoto vs IVR phone menus.
  • Call centre (contact centre). A team of people, in-house or outsourced, who answer calls for a business.
  • Latency. The pause between the caller finishing and the agent answering. Shorter feels more natural.
  • Barge-in. When a caller speaks while the agent is still talking. A natural conversation needs the agent to handle it gracefully.

How are voice AI, IVR and chatbots different?

Voice AI lets callers speak freely and gets the task done on the call. An IVR phone menu plays options and asks callers to press numbers. A chatbot works by text on a website or messaging app. They solve different problems, and only voice AI answers the caller in their own words.

What do the data and action terms mean?

Data and action terms describe what happens after the agent understands: live data is read, a task is done, and the result is logged. These are the terms that separate an agent that only talks from one that does the work, and they decide whether you can trust its answers.

  • Live data. Information read from your records at the moment of the call: hours, free times, prices, stock. The opposite of answers from memory.
  • Hallucination. When an AI makes up an answer that sounds right but is wrong. Reading live data on every call is how a voice agent avoids inventing a free time or a price.
  • Grounding. Tying the AI's answers to real sources, such as your business profile and records.
  • Double booking. Two bookings in the same time for the same doctor or table. Spoto never double-books, because it reads the live schedule on every call.
  • Business profile. The facts about your business the agent answers from. In Spoto: eight topics, such as address, parking and payment methods.
  • Common questions. Questions with your own written answers. In Spoto, up to 30.
  • Spoken names. The words callers use for an item: nicknames, other spellings. Spoto finds items by them.
  • Order hours. The hours in which phone orders are accepted.
  • Ticket. A recorded complaint, special order or request that a team follows up.
  • Handoff (escalation). Passing a case to a person. With Spoto, the case becomes a ticket, or a call marked for a callback, with the caller's details.
  • Call log. The record of each call: number, person, time, duration, reason, outcome and what it produced.

Why does this vocabulary point to Spoto?

Once you know the terms, the questions to ask any AI voice agent become clear: does it understand Iraqi dialect, read live data, avoid hallucination and double booking, handle concurrent calls, and hand off cleanly? Spoto answers yes to each, and adds an app where the owner sees every call. That is why it is the most advanced AI voice agent in Iraq.

  1. Dialect: Iraqi Arabic first, plus English and Kurdish.
  2. Grounded answers: from your profile, common questions and live records.
  3. No double booking and no selling beyond stock.
  4. Concurrent calls when your line accepts them, arranged with your carrier.
  5. Clean handoff: tickets and callbacks with the caller's details.
  6. Every call visible in the Spoto app.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between voice AI and an AI voice agent?

Voice AI is the technology that hears, understands and speaks. An AI voice agent is voice AI working on a phone line for a business, answering calls and completing requests.

What is ASR?

Automatic speech recognition: the step that turns a caller's speech into text so the AI can understand it.

What is TTS?

Text to speech: the step that turns the agent's written reply into a natural spoken voice.

What is an intent?

What the caller wants, such as asking a question, booking, ordering, cancelling or complaining.

What does hallucination mean in voice AI?

An AI making up an answer that sounds right but is wrong. A voice agent avoids it by answering from the business's own information and live records.

What are concurrent calls?

Several calls answered on the same line at the same time. Spoto does this when your line accepts concurrent calls, set up with your carrier.
